I love the works of Thomas Merton and my new book, "Spiritual Journaling -God's Whispers in Daily Living" is available on Kindle and Amazon. http://amzn.to/qQz6NgDan Phillipshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14885264355876434431noreply@blogger.comBlogger1463125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8218621.post-64602168156108713652015-05-14T10:53:00.004-05:002015-05-14T10:53:50.543-05:00Spiritual simplicityWe are planning a trip to Paris and the beaches of Normandy. That means library trips, viewing appropriate web sites, reading, dreaming, and counting days. I have just finished reading "Heaven in Stone and Glass" by Robert Barron. The subtitle is "Experiencing the Spirituality of the Great Cathedrals." I love cathedrals. I have been to a few; Westminster Abbey, Saint Pauls, the Vatican. I look forward to visiting several in France.

Of course France and Napoleon. I have bought Rick Steves book on Paris and am digesting it slowly. Beaches are important. Janet's dad landed on Utah Beach on D-Day. I will watch a few movies on WWII.

Barron makes an interesting comment while spending a day of meditation in Chartres Cathedral. He spent a day of reflection, going throughout the cathedral. He sat in various corners while making the rounds of the church. He often meditated for long periods sitting in front of one of the windows or sculptures. Near the end of the day he walked the labyrinth. That, to me, sounds like the ideal way to see a cathedral.

As to my days I enjoy reading Alex Tang and have enjoyed studying the Tecarta Bible, a real app addition for Bible Readers. I am enjoying The Ladder of the Beatitudes by Jim Forest. I am looking forward to the Thomas Merton Event the first week in June, celebrating the 100th year of his birth. Hope to see you there.
A soft breeze blows. I have been reading from the book of ecclesiastical. Be thankful. Keep your eyes on the Lord. Quietness is part of a true religious experience. Whether by the office window, seaside, a mountain top, the silence is the key.

We have little time for silence . to many things seek our attention. Just to be. So hard! So I am thankful in the sun and the blessing of being away. Tired of the cold weather and dismal cloudy days I am going somewhere tomorrow where it is 84 degrees. Check back and see where I ended up. The Olympics relived lots of Russia history to me. We went to the fortress of St. Petersburg and St. Paul where all the czars are buried. I grew appreciative of Peter the Great while standing by his tomb. Even the Romano's were there after there bodies had
been recovered.,

The history of Russia is full of great tragedy and monumental struggles. The churches have become museums, but there is a vibrancy. Traffic jams remind one of New York City. Smaller cars but usually only one driver. The Hermitage, the Russian louve, stands on a precipice like Mount Everest, a beautiful creation.

The modern Russian city reminds me of ancient victories and defeats, but to often all we see is strange commodes, devastating descriptions of a proud
Country that can take care of its own security needs without our meddling superiority.

We somehow miss a trip to Tolstoy`s home or trivialize this countries struggles because our own pride of course conquers our day. Something to think About!

We have had 2 To 3 inches all over the South but not us. There Is talk of an impenetrable wall south of I 40 that is like a black hole for snow. None arrives.

In the meantime we see politicians blaming the weatherman, a viscous intruder attacking Jim Cantor, and even dogs sleeping on their backs to protest the snow. Several other headlines capture our attention:a cruise ship has 700 sick passengers, a man has been caught with hundreds of sleepy snakes hoarding his house, super bowl weather stirs up concern,, and I am sick with a head cold, sore throat, and coughing.

My birds are hungry and me to sick to walk out in 10 degree weather to feed them. When I am sick I don't read, don't drink enough juice, and feel miserable. I pass the time watching the science channel. Maybe a nap is appropriate. Where is Yogi Bear when I need him. My eyes hurt from typing this. I have read the paper. Sometimes an unexpected person enters a life. They may be a teacher, a person to guide us, a word of comfort when our vision is distorted.

With it 18 degrees outside baseball. Is far away, but I am reading R.A.Dickey's autobiography. His confrontation with himself is inspiring. From a career as a minor leaguer he wins the Cy Young award as the best picture in the National League in 2012. The secret? A knuckle ball, tons of practice, and people who believed in him.

It is easy to forget those who touched our life and gave us confidence in ourselves.

Two questions. Who are people who changed our lives and the second question is "whose lives are we changing because we believe in them?" You think about that!Dan Phillipshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14885264355876434431noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8218621.post-27275142153902611292014-01-20T10:00:00.004-06:002014-01-21T21:58:08.197-06:00This is a review of recent Merton retreat idid. Our scripture reading/study tomorrow is Psalm 139, one of my favorites. When I moved to Nashville, I lived with Mrs. J.O. Williams for 3 months. This was her favorite Psalm and she had copies she gave to all she met. It was printed on her notecards.
Recently saw Philomena and enjoyed it very much. We also saw Gravity and Saving Mr.Banks. I was disappointed that Emma Thompson did not get nominated for an academy award. She is my favorite actress.
By the way my title for Psalm 139 in NOWHEre tO HIDE. What is your title for it?Dan Phillipshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14885264355876434431noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8218621.post-49722082497944505032013-11-13T18:39:00.001-06:002013-11-13T18:40:44.887-06:00NEW WEBPAGE !!!!- AT LAST!

My web host CHANGED the url of each of my 30? websites resulting in that nobody can get in my sites. Everything in search engines is gone. Can you imagine changing hundreds of websites and losing all search engine data? 15 years of work down the drain. I am still in shock!Dan Phillipshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14885264355876434431noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8218621.post-18480154084998955812013-09-09T17:04:00.000-05:002013-09-09T17:04:06.991-05:00BUSY SUMMER

I always seem to be behind on this blog. A busy time keeping up with grandchildren, church, visiting the Nashville zoo, the Frist Center for the Art, going to a Nashville Sounds Baseball Game..Tomorrow we celebrate our 46th wedding anniversary.Seems a lot shorter than that.

I have bought hearing aids and am having a difficult time learning to use them. Everything sounds like I have my head in a barrel. .Ugh.

It has rained for 3 solid days. The sun came out at 5:30p.m., in time to hear about the airplane crash in San Francisco and the continued Egyptian uprising.

It has not been uneventful this spring/summer. We went on a Baltic Sea Cruise on the Vision of the Seas. We stopped at Tallin, Estonia, St.Petersburg, Russia, Helsinki, Finland, Stockholm, Sweden, and Copenhagen, Denmark. Food was good. It was fun seeing another part of the world.

Our Air-conditioner tore up, $8000. Car needs towing. Can't find replacement lightbulb for the kitchen. A tree fell on our pontoon. More happening, costwise, than I like.

We have been having fun with grandchildren, boys aged 2 and 5. We went to the zoo. I was exhausted from that experience.

Tomorrow is Sunday. We will be studying the excitement of Hezekiah's life.

I got my blogger fixed so hope to blog more.

Enough, enough. I said, ENOUGH! For some reason several of my passwords have been reset, meaning I have been unable to get into this site to do new musings.

It is finally summer. Spring/winter lasted way to long. Everything is tore up. Lawnmower will not work.Smoke comes out of belt when I use it. It is not much use under those conditions. Hired summer lawn man.Cost lots of money but MAYBE i am just to old to mow an acre of lawn without doing injury to myself.

How does one know one is to old to do something?

Had a detached retina and got it fixed. It took several weeks until I got new glasses and I see pretty well, but not perfect. Ran into a branch that made blood while trying to drive the lawnmower.

52nd High School reunion is this weekend. 200 mile drive. Hope I make it.

JOURNALING

A few words from the journal.

It was snowing the other night during a full moon. A once in a lifetime event. (3/25/13)

Visited Louisana to visit my Aunt Jenny and then to Jackson, MS. to visit my niece Kristen.

What stirs your soul? Reflect where God is in your life.

The real fasting of the preacher is not from good but from eloquence.

NEW IDEA ON FASTING....why not fast from good but fast from tv,social media, and no newspaper for a day. That is a real fast.

When was God active in your life?

Prayer Focus on:

Our needs
our longings
our pleas for forgiveness
our aspirations
our thanksgiving
our commendation of others
our dreams
our desire for closeness to God
(Douglas Steere)

There is a gift of prayer
Source of graces
Purifies the heart and affections
strengthens our virtue
we speak to God
We listen to God
A place to search for direction
What is best way I can serve God?
If I am not on your facebook list you can become my friend by looking up Brodanphillips. Hopefully I will see you soon.
What did you hear?

Dan Phillipshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14885264355876434431noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8218621.post-20288520663580283352012-07-27T12:06:00.000-05:002012-07-29T23:08:07.025-05:00South Pole

Where I use to hang out as a teenager.

Sent from my Verizon Wireless 4G LTE DROID
Dan Phillipshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14885264355876434431noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8218621.post-67963464643091104852012-07-12T20:33:00.001-05:002012-07-12T20:33:55.328-05:00A Sudden Danger
At times I find myself out of sorts, feeling guilty over words said, or just a general dis-ease with life in general.

An Uncertain Time

With the election for 2012 on the horizon, an unusual attitude seems to be increasing in every conversation. There is a hidden anger in our country that one reacts toward that is descending for us all. Uncertainty-yes. Fear-yes. Questions upon question that at times make sense, at other times they seem out of place. We are all uptight! Outrageously angry, or our voices rise unexpectedly without warning.

We are all overwhelmed with rhetoric meant to hurt, inappropriate words that sting, pictures that assume we are not smart enough to figure things out for ourselves, so someone pushes their agenda without thought of what it really means in our face daring us to speak up.

What is my agenda?

The truth is I want to be inquisitive, yet positive in answer (a near impossibility it seems in our time). I want to respect opinions without feeling threatened. I want to control what I hear, yet hear with a discerning spirit other sides without lies or falsified statements meant to capture me in a falsified discussion. On facebook I am de-friending those who constantly irritate me or send out way to many tweets (13 in 4 hours is to many), on twitter to discern a spirit of closeness to Christ without belittling me if I disagree.

In summary, the biggest problem is myself! How do I control myself and not become that which I detest? How do I love the unloveable? How can I respect and not grow angry at hurtful words said? (Less tv is an easy answer). Turning off messengers who cause me to feel bad is another.

So, I will look for the simple, a dog looking out the window, a baseball game with the sound turned down, read only that which uplifts, and above all, "keep my mouth shut." O LORD HELP ME! May your will be beside me and the tempter falling further and further behind.
Dan Phillipshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14885264355876434431noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8218621.post-29768734234328933652012-07-10T09:05:00.001-05:002012-07-10T09:05:36.890-05:00Beginning
Each day
A new beginning
Waiting for the sunrise as a bridegroom waits for his bride
We listen first
Awakening sounds, a thirst of music attunes us
Then we stretch and yawn
Wash our face
Eat slowly as we peer past the window
To see the birds dancing in flight to the feeder.

There is a PSALM today of desire and remembrance
Of great days of worship and hope. Why I can not get organized. Every week or two I go through a dysfunctional exercise to clean out beside my favorite reading chair. Each week the problem grows, leaning toward a monumental book tower of Pisa.

While under going my routine today, I counted the number of books which I read, or just meandered through. I rarely read through a book, just bits and pieces of it. Anyway, todays count explains why I can't succeed in my endeavors. There are 17 books beside me that I have read out of this week. How sad. Now I understand. What to do. What to do?
Dan Phillipshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14885264355876434431noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8218621.post-53853010671868712872012-07-07T09:53:00.001-05:002012-07-07T09:53:41.577-05:00A Time of Thirst
"My soul thirsts for you." (Psalm 42). A lazy Saturday. Another 100 plus day. 7 of last 9 days have been over a 100.

How much do I want God? As much as a drop of rain? A friendly cloud? The destructive forces come to defeat our spirit, but David pours out his soul! I like that phrase. And he fights the exhaustive forces by remembering the past on days he went, leading the procession to the sanctuary, singing with thanksgiving.

Where does our joy go?

Lord, help us to receive your presence with joy. We put our hope in you. (Psalm 42:11)

Dan Phillipshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14885264355876434431noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8218621.post-28971727210155218392012-07-06T09:31:00.001-05:002012-07-06T09:31:02.618-05:00Heatwave
The miserable 100 plus degree weather continues. It rained, really sprinkled hard, for 4 minutes last night. Welcomed but way to short.

Don't get out much during heat. I need to get some good exercise but I lack needed energy.

Looked at tv this morning briefly. All one sees is political mishmash and yelling with big band backgrounds. I miss the quiet days when J. Fred Muggs was the entertainment. Now one can't hear anything worthwhile above the yells of the announcers. And the audience to is yelling all the time. Why can't there ever be any silence? Best advice I have is "turn it off."

Watched 2 episodes of BBC drama Berkeley Square last night. Got the dvd at the library. Sort of a downstairs Downton Abbey.

Has anyone tried the strawberry slush at Sonic? Pretty good!
Dan Phillipshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14885264355876434431noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8218621.post-2789308223305737412012-07-05T10:52:00.001-05:002012-07-05T10:52:07.630-05:00Dancing with Words, RED PINE
I have today discovered Bill Porter, also known as RED PINE. He is two days older than me. I look forward to reading his books. This is a good read about him.

http://kyotojournal.org/interviews/redpine.html
Dan Phillipshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14885264355876434431noreply@blogger.com1
