....about Merton......Someone said mockingly of 'those who wish to draw near to the fire of God and yet not be burnt.' In Merton, we see one who dared to draw near and to then proceed to express to the world what it means to be deeply touched by intimacy with the God of fire, of the most lovable love....Fr. Louis, we are grateful to God for your witness.

"To those who seek God's face, there shall be blessings in abundance...and mercy upon them." Psalm 23:5,6 He was not a writer who happened to be a monk...he was a monk who had to write...

.....Grace.....Merton wrote so often of it...wonder if anyone has the figure?...how many times he wrote or spoke of the gift of God, Grace...What is this unique gift?... this giving of God...this gentle push to good...the pull towards the better choice...the endurance to continue a good work...the attraction to what is right... the yearning for all that is pure and wholesome...hunger for prayer and solitude...even some pain...even some sadness....emptying so that He may come more fully in. What shall we say of 'grace?' It is a simple and mysterious sharing in the very Being of God, part of His 'life'...a union...a hand reaching down...an arm embracing round...meeting together in a bond of love...flame getting lost in flames.....

....Grace per St Paul Romans 5:2 "...through Christ we have found entrance into this state of grace in which we now abide and exult in hope..."

....they say of monks 'They are turning their backs on the world...walking away from those who need them.' How untrue. I am sure Merton carried the world and its needs everyday to the throne of God. He did not abandon the world but rather, loved the world and daily put it into the Father's hands with a fervent prayer for us all....Thanks, Fr. Louis....

...It is said of Merton, and true, that He did run from the world but rather carried it into the monastery...there to pray that it be touched by God...
