Quiet and Sleepy

It is a quiet and sleepy morn. I begin with cereal and later have 2 pieces of toast with grape jelly. It will be a hot day, probably reaching as high as 97. I do not plan on being outside very much.

I have been reading Anthony's trip to St. John's Abbey. It is very inspiring.

A friend picked some blackberries for me this weekend and gave them to me yesterday. I enjoyed them last night with splenda and creame. What have you done for a friend recently?

THOUGHTFUL.....Recently, my wife went to lunch with a high school pal who is now a widow and quite lonely. As a little surprise, my wife gave her the beautiful figurine from Torino, Italy...we have had it for 46 years...it was given to us for our wedding by this lady's mother. She was so touched...she would have this very well done figurine that her mother had picked out and gift wrapped years back. So proud of my wife and her goodness of heart. "Lord, how shall we give and not receive a blessing? The giver is far more blessed than the receiver."

BOUGHT LUNCH......Not much of a favor but I wanted to treat a very good clergyman. John has been a great source of encouragement to all his flock and all his friends. He is my coach in the spiritual life...and most respected friend. He is the founder of an ecumenical seminary where very poor men of the inner city who wanted to be preachers could receive the training that they could not afford elsewhere...what a gift of faith and love!!!

TO REMEMBER GIVING...When Roger and Leila died (very short while apart) I went to the bookstore and bought the very nicest book that they had about 'Celebrating Christmas.' I had it inscribed in their memory and gave it to the library where hundreds of others might also enjoy it. Back in the fortys, I was a poor kid selling magazines door to door. They invited me back again and again...ate dinner there many times...was treated like their own kid (they were childless.) Others received the same loving acceptance from them. Will never forget them and all their goodness.

WHAT I GAVE AWAY...........My dear mother was a very kind and thoughtful person...always doing some good thing for someone in various needs. She found a lot of happiness in giving. She often would say to me "In Heaven, you can only bring the things you gave away."
