OF MERTON.......He was a monk inclined to writing and not a writer in monk's garb. I like to think of him in that manner. His calling was to search daily for God and his work was a sharing of that journey with the outside world. He invited us to climb the mountain with him. db

IN US.............T. Merton: "When we act according to grace, our actions are not ours alone, they belong to God...His actions in us reveal His being in us."

NOT IN THE GIFTS.............Per T. Merton: "All the gifts of God are good. But if we rest in them rather than in Him, they lose their goodness for us." Giver of the gifts, we seek THEE...not just what You can give to us!.

LEARNING.............In His mercy, God sends various inspired persons to teach us more of the wonderful ways of God. How wise, for those who listen and learn. Merton was one of those 'lights' that held up the Light of the World for us all to see. He himself was not the Light.

LOVE OF GOD FOR US.............T. Merton: "O kind and terrible love which You have given to me and which could not last in my heart if Thou didst not love me." db

Chapel Bells ( ref T. Merton)
The bells say:
Come with us, God is good;
Christ is risen, Salvation is not hard;
His love has made it easy.The bells call to all;
Like God they speak to those who come
And to those who do not.
Like the rains falling on the fields,
the just and the unjust.
The calling out is perfect
As God is perfect.
Love is extended to
Saint and sinner alike. (Based on a quote from Thoughts in Solitude by Merton).

TRUE HUMILITY....T. Merton "True humility is, in a way, a very real despair...despair of myself... despair of all that is not God so that, in humility, I put all my concern in His hands. If not in His hands? Then where? What man can stand to fall into such darkness?...so as not to have hope in Him?"

SILENCE........T.Merton: "When I am liberated by silence...I can discover a form of prayer where there is no distraction because my whole life becomes my prayer. My silence is full of prayer. I am immersed in a world of stillness...all of which contributes to my prayer to God and to my love of His Presence."
