Thomas Merton's St. Ann
On my last trip to Gethsemani Brother Paul Quennon took several of us to St. Ann's, the tool shed TM used to meditate in. It was his first real hermitage. He often went there in the daytime.
I am retired now, a full-time writer. I still actively do retreats. I love the works of Thomas Merton and my new book, "Spiritual Journaling -God's Whispers in Daily Living" is available on Kindle and Amazon. http://amzn.to/qQz6Ng

THE HERMITAGE..........Thanks for the picture of StAnn's. Never saw a photo of it. To speak of a hermiage, Francis of Assisi liked to tell his brethern that each of them had a 'hermitage' that they carrried with them everywhere...it was that inmost place of the heart where they could welcome the Lord God and rest in His Presence. Early this AM I took a walk before the sun was fully up. I carried my 'hermitage' with me and inwardly kept communion with God. Thanks again for the pictures of Merton's hermitage...a place of deep prayer I am sure.
JOY............Psalm 4:7 "O God, Thy light is with us...gladness fills our hearts...You have looked on us and given us joy." How shall we measure the value of a glance from our God? How great is His love and how blessed we are in that 'fire.'
TO LOOK FOR HIM..........Psalm 13:2 "And the Lord looked down to see if there be one soul that understands and looks for Him." In His love, He watches daily to welcome that soul that looks for Him.
DRAW NEAR..........How much we need those times of quiet reflection and listening. How many times has the Lord called out to us and we could not hear Him? I treasure this little prayer: "O God, give us a time that is simple and uncluttered, so that we may 'hear' the message Your Love has uttered."
Man, I wish I'd had time to go up there with you guys that day. Maybe I can talk somebody into sneaking me up there sometime. Good stuff.
GOD KNOWS EACH HEART.......Psalm 138:23,24 "O God, You know my heart...You know my path...lead me as You would. Examine my heart and prove me...let me always love the ways of Thine." Nothing about us is a mystery to God. We come to God 'as we are' for we are completely known by Him.
Oh man, I'd love to have seen that! i feel a little jealous. :-)
Peace,
Bryan
HERMITAGE..........The picture of the hermitage makes me question myself "Am I doing much in the way of meditation and quiet reflection?" God calls everyday but I cannot say that I pray well and deeply each day. Help us, Lord. When You welcome us, why do we have so many other things to attend to? We are like the invited ones who refused to go to the banquet. Misere Domini
