This could be your week

This is a picture I took in Israel at the Shrine of the Book. Note the words on the sign!

Thomas Merton (Peace/Remedies)

"Never before have men talked so much about peace, and never has there
been so little peace in the world.  What was said by the prophet
Jeremiah of the men of his time applies even more truly to the men of
our own:  they said, 'Peace, Peace', and there is no peace.

We prescribe for one another remedies that will bring us peace of mind,
and we are still devoured by anxiety.  We evolve plans for disarmament
and for the peace of nations, and our plans only change the manner and
method of aggression.  The rich have everything they want except
happiness, and the poor are sacrificed to the unhappiness of the rich.
Dictatorships use their secret police to crush millions of men under an
intolerable burden of lies, injustice and tyranny, and those who still
live in democracies have forgotten how to make good use of their
liberty.  For liberty is a think of the spirit, and we are no longer
able to live for anything but our bodies.  How can we find peace, true
peace, if we forget that we are not machines for making for making and
spending money, but spiritual beings and sons of the most high God?"

Mike Celizic Dies- Death of a Cancer Patient

Mike was an excellent writer but his final episode was the writing he did as the final chapter in his life.
Having worked for a hospice and hospitals I have seen this final chapter many times. My admiration for Mike is how he handled it. No more chemo, maybe just a couple of weeks to live, but lets not keep playing this game! Lets make the most of what is left. I don't want to continue being racked with pain, losing all the body functions I have, and not being able to say goodbye when the end comes. That is where the courage is and I have always admired those who I know who played the game this way. It was a winner!

Jupiter

I saw Jupiter through my ten power binoculars tonight and also could see four of its moons.

Nighthawks

One of the most exciting things while visiting Chicago a week ago was going to the Chicago Art Museum. It gave me a chance to see Edward Hopper's Nighthawk,s picture, his most famous picture. It was done in 1942, just after WW2 had begun. All of his pictures have solitude and lots of thoughtfuless about them. I also saw some Georgia O'Keefe and others but this was my favorite. Here are some added details of this picture. Isn't it amazing the influence of one piece of art?
