Lancelot Andrewes

Thoughts of his from his Private Devotions:

God forbid that I should sin by ceasing to pray for you. (Whom am I
praying for?)

God hears the heart.

God always gives more than he asks.

Prayer is a summary of faith, an interpreter of hope.

THERE IS COMING A DAY WHEN:
1. All will worship together, lingering at the House of God.

2. Those lowly and humble will gather.

3. The Lord himself will live among us.

4. Joyful songs will be sung.

Selah.

AM with MERTON (Advice)

From: wayne burns <wayneburnsB@webtv.net>

"People ask me advice. I suppose I shouldn't give it. I feel terrible
when I do--not because they will think I am a fool, but because they
might go ahead and take it."

(THE SIGN OF JONAS, page 153)

How serious am I about giving advice?

Thanks Wayne

Journals of the Heart

(Worth reading)

Dan,

I found your site quite interesting and there is a lot of good
information. I teach people how to hear God's heart for their life and
journal it day by day. As I look through your ideas and suggestions I am
going to be able to improve on what God has called me to do.

Blessings and keep up the good work.

Tucumcari, New Mexico

Hi there Dan,

My name's Adam Shirley, I'm the producer of an Afternoon radio program in Australia. The program is a talk radio format, which is relaxed and friendly in terms of its pacing. We like to explore a whole range of stories in an easy conversational manner.

David Kilby is the host of this show, and he was interested in talking to you about the town of Tucumcari. David has listened to the Jimmy Rogers song which I think refers to Tucumcari, and it made him wonder what the town is like. Would you be interested in talking to us about the town features, history and its people?

In terms of timing, we were hoping to have a chat at around 9.30pm, Wednesday 13th June your local time - I think this works out to 1.30pm the next day for us here in Canberra, Australia. This would be a live interview over the phone, and we wouldn't take up more than about 15 minutes of your time. Looking forward to hearing back from you, and hoping you’re available to talk with us!

Kind regards,
Adam

Jim Forest and Dan Phillips

As I have mentioned previously, the highlight of the convention for me
was the speech by Jim Forest. The genuiness of his Christianity, the
depth of feeling, and his shared testimony will not be easily forgotten.
Before leaving I bought from Jeanette Cantrell a copy of Jim's book
"Praying with Icons." Enclosed is a picture of Jim and myself.

Memphis of the Nile

Nice note from Steve Georgiou, author of the Way Date: Sat, 9 Jun 2007

Hi Bro Dan:

This be Steve Georgiou (Dreamcatcher author).
Thanks for blogging the Merton conference; makes me sorta feel
like I'm there--it would have been good to go, but too many
things happening here; my very best to EVERYBODY out there!
And if you see Jonathon Montaldo, Jim Harford, tell them I said HI!

Around end of August or so I'll send you a copy of my new book which
periodically
brings up Bob Lax & Merton. It's called MYSTIC STREET; I sent over a
bunch of
flyers there, maybe you already got one; others are going around.

Have a good conference wrap-up. All best to you. Keep yer wings tips
up!

Peace~God Bless,
Steve

Christian Brothers Universitry

The sign in the marble Bible says, "live Jesus in our hearts forever."
And on the clipboard it says, "let us remember that we are in the holy
presence of God."

Jim Forest

I am not doing a very good job of keeping this ITMS blog going. Guess I
am just too lazy. Last night Jim Forest did an exceptional job. I felt
as if Merton himself was talking with us.

The food has been great. The program full of variety and knowledgeable
presenters. We had a shower of rain yesterday that was welcomed.

Friday Afternoon

Paul Pearson gave an excellent speech last night on the importance of
listening. I have met some old friends: Bill Clemmons whom I once went
to a conference with in 1969, a former monk under Merton, and Father
Raymond from Christchurch, New Zealand. Enclosed is photo of Father
James Conner, one of our principal speakers.

Merton in England

I spent the afternoon reading Forest biography of Merton, Living with
Wisdom. How different this book feels since I have been to London and
those early places where Merton lived.

Vergos Rendevous

Started stay in Memphis at the Vergos Rendevous BBQ restaurant, one of
the 5 best BBQ restaurants in America. I ate cole slaw, baked beans, and
a slab of fry ribs. What fabulous eating!!

International Thomas Merton Society

It is a beautiful morning to begin the journey to Memphis. I am going
with my friend Gary Brown. It will be his first meeting. The weather is
stunning. 70 degrees. No cloudys. A soft breeze. I go with no
expectations on this journey. I am taking Living with Wisdom in hopes
Jim Forest will sign it for me.

Thomas Merton - Memphis, TN

I am looking forward to Thursday. Getting up early to go to Memphis for the Thomas Merton Meeting. Be sure to introduce yourself to me if I do not know you.

One of our local priests died this weekend, Father Edward Arnold. For 31 years he served St. Philip's Catholic Church in Franklin, TN. One of our nurses took care of him during the last months of his life. She was a blessed angel during this time for him.

I took a choir that once sang to Father Arnold while he was in a nursing home. We sang A Mighty Fortress is our God, not realizing that Martin Luther wrote that during the reformation.

It is interesting to note that many bloggers are slowing down. Like all things there is a time for silence I suppose.
